My French Riviera correspondent will be probably sent to prison before he’s fifty, but he has nevertheless excellent musical taste. Today, I discovered thanks to him Bohren & Der Club of Gore.

an “unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds”

It reminds me strongly of the excellent Jean-Pierre Melville movies’ OST.

I think this is the famous Maxim 08/15 machine gun from WW1.

The word 08/15 lives on as an idiom in colloquial German, 08/15 (pronounced Null-acht-fünfzehn), being used even today as an adjective to denote something totally ordinary and lacking in originality or specialness. However, this is one of several possible origins of the idiom.

My personal experience of disapointment on German highways. You can run fast (and by fast, I mean, really, really fast) for maybe five minutes, then you’re stuck for hours in tailbacks, then you can drive a little, but not more than 90 kph on the left line in an unlimited area, since some idiot decided he absolutely needed to pass a truck with a speed difference of 5 kph. It was as dangerous as the Bern-Solothurn highway, as stupid as the Lausanne-Geneva highway, with the added frustation of being theoritically able to drive at twice the speed of sound.
